New York, NY (November 5, 2015) – The following is a statement from the National Supermarket Association’s Executive Director Haile Rivera in opposition to the proposed New York City Council legislation that would impose a citywide tax on grocery bags:
“This bill is a regressive tax in sheep's clothing that will impede business and hurt low-income communities. Whether 10 cents or 5 cents, the last thing our member small businesses need are more burdensome regulations to comply with. Council Members Lander and Chin should revisit the drawing board and advocate policies that create opportunities for New Yorkers instead.”
The National Supermarket Association supports the Bag the Tax NYC Coalition, which launched in October 2014 to promote recycling and recycling education as an alternative to a regressive tax that would burden New York City’s low-income families and senior citizens.
